Neck pain & headache Physio in Cairns

Find the cause. Get your neck moving again.

Does this sound familiar?

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. Neck pain and headaches are among the most common presentations we see at Far North Physiotherapy. Our Cairns physios assess what’s actually causing the problem and build you a clear plan to fix it.

Why neck pain keeps coming back

For a lot of people, neck pain gets managed rather than fixed. A massage helps for a day or two. Rest takes the edge off. But without identifying what’s actually driving the problem, the same structures keep getting overloaded and the pain returns.

Neck pain and headaches often share a common root. The upper joints of the cervical spine can refer pain forward into the head, while sustained muscle tightness from posture or stress drives tension headaches that sit behind the eyes or across the forehead. Treating the symptom without addressing the source is why so many people stay stuck.

Common contributing factors our physios look for:

Neck and headache conditions we treat

Neck pain isn’t one thing, and the right treatment depends on what’s actually going on. Here are the most common conditions our Cairns physios assess and treat.

Acute and Chronic Neck Pain

Whether it came on suddenly or has been building for months, neck pain nearly always has a mechanical cause that responds well to physio. We assess the joints, muscles, and nerves involved and build a plan to get you moving freely again.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches originate from the upper joints of the cervical spine, not from inside the head itself. They tend to be one-sided, start at the base of the skull, and refer forward. This type of headache responds well to targeted physiotherapy assessment and treatment.

Tension Headaches

Sustained muscle tightness in the neck and upper back is one of the most common drivers of tension-type headaches. Physio addresses the underlying muscle and postural patterns rather than just managing symptoms.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

Pain that spreads across the neck and shoulder is often referred from the cervical spine rather than a shoulder injury. A proper assessment identifies the source so you’re treating the right structure.

Whiplash

Whiplash injuries affect the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine. Left untreated, they frequently become chronic. Early physio assessment after a motor vehicle accident or collision is recommended to reduce recovery time and lower the risk of long-term problems.

Nerve Pain and Radiculopathy

Pins and needles, numbness, or weakness running into the arm or hand can indicate cervical nerve involvement. We assess the full picture and manage both the spinal source and the nerve pathway.

How we treat neck pain and headaches

Our process starts with a thorough assessment to understand what’s actually driving your symptoms. From there, we build a plan specifically for you.

What to expect:

01

Assessment and diagnosis

Your first appointment covers your history, posture, range of motion, joint mechanics, muscle strength, and neural tension. We identify the root cause and give you a clear diagnosis before any treatment begins.

02

A plan you actually understand

03

Hands-on treatment

Treatment is tailored to what’s driving your pain. Depending on your presentation, this may include manual therapy, joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, dry needling, taping, or nerve management. We use the techniques that are appropriate for your condition, not a standard protocol.

04

Rehabilitation and prevention

We build you a progressive program to strengthen the neck and upper back, correct the movement patterns contributing to your pain, and reduce the risk of it returning. Practical, not generic.

Neck pain FAQs

How long will it take to resolve my neck pain?

It depends on the cause and how long it’s been present. Cervicogenic headaches and acute neck stiffness can respond quickly, often within one to three sessions. Chronic pain with postural or degenerative components takes longer and usually requires a structured exercise program. After your assessment, we’ll give you a realistic timeline specific to your situation.

Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for cervicogenic and tension-type headaches. If your headaches are accompanied by neurological symptoms, vision changes, or came on suddenly after a head injury, see a GP first. For most chronic or recurring headaches with a postural or cervical component, physio is a good starting point.

The structures involved are similar but the mechanisms differ. Desk-related neck pain tends to involve sustained posture, muscle imbalance, and progressive stiffness. Sports injuries more often involve acute loading, whiplash forces, or direct trauma. Both respond well to physio, though the treatment program looks different. Your assessment will tell us what we’re dealing with.

No. You can book directly without a GP referral. Most private health extras policies cover physiotherapy. If you’ve been referred by a GP under a chronic condition management plan, you may be eligible for Medicare-rebated sessions. Contact us if you’re unsure.

Chronic neck pain often responds well to the right treatment even after years of being present. Come in for an assessment and we’ll give you an honest picture of what’s achievable.
