Whether you’ve done your ankle on the weekend, torn your ACL mid-season, or have been nursing a shoulder that won’t settle, you need a physio who understands sport. At Far North Physio, sports injury is what we do. We assess properly, rehabilitate thoroughly, and make sure you’re ready to return to sport as soon as possible.
We’re the official physiotherapy provider for the Northern Pride rugby league team and have over 20 years of elite sport experience behind the clinical approach we bring to every patient.
Sports physiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focused on the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sport-related injuries. It goes beyond getting you out of pain. The goal is restoring full function, addressing the physical deficits that caused the injury, and ensuring you return to sport with the capacity to perform and the resilience to stay there.
At Far North Physio, our sports physio approach is built on the same protocols used in elite competition. Structured progressive loading, objective return-to-sport criteria, and a clear understanding of the demands of your specific sport.
We work with athletes and active adults across a wide range of sports in Cairns and the Far North Queensland region. Common sports and activities we see include:
If your sport isn’t on the list, it doesn’t matter. Injury assessment and rehabilitation principles apply across all sporting contexts. If you play it, we can help you get back to it.
Getting back to training is not the same as being ready to compete. Return to sport requires passing objective benchmarks, not just being pain-free. Our return-to-sport process includes:
For ACL reconstructions, high-grade muscle strains, and complex shoulder injuries, this process is non-negotiable. Clearing an athlete before they meet objective criteria is the single biggest risk factor for re-injury.
Rehabilitation and strength and conditioning overlap significantly in sport. We bridge that gap. For athletes who need more than injury management, we develop progressive strength and conditioning programs that address the specific demands of their sport and the physical deficits identified through assessment.
This is particularly relevant for athletes returning from significant injury, those with a history of recurrent problems, and anyone looking to build a more resilient physical foundation for their sport.
Far North Physio is the official physiotherapy provider for the Northern Pride rugby league team. Our clinical director has over 20 years of experience across elite international sport, including rugby league, cricket, netball, rugby sevens, and the Papua New Guinea Olympic program. That experience shapes the clinical standards and rehabilitation protocols we bring to every patient, from elite athletes to weekend club players.

As soon as possible for significant injuries. Early assessment means accurate diagnosis, appropriate management from the start, and a shorter overall recovery. For minor injuries that seem to be settling on their own, if you’re not progressing as expected within a week or two, come in. Delayed presentation for injuries like ACL tears, shoulder dislocations, and high-grade muscle strains is one of the main reasons recoveries drag out.
No. You can book directly without a GP referral. If you’re coming under WorkCover, DVA, or a GP management plan, contact us and we’ll advise on the process.
It depends entirely on the injury. A Grade 1 ankle sprain may take two to four weeks. An ACL reconstruction takes nine to twelve months for a full return-to-sport process. High-grade muscle strains sit somewhere in between. After your assessment, we’ll give you a realistic timeline specific to your injury and your sport.
In most cases, yes, with modifications. Complete rest is rarely the right approach and often delays recovery. The goal is finding what you can do that doesn’t aggravate the injury and keeps you as fit and strong as possible while the tissue heals. Your physio will help you work out what that looks like for your situation.
All of them. Rugby league, AFL, cricket, netball, running, triathlon, swimming, gym, soccer, basketball, touch football and more. The injury assessment and rehabilitation principles are consistent regardless of the sport. What changes is the sport-specific loading and return-to-sport testing, which we tailor to the demands of your game.
Book a sports physio assessment in Cairns and leave with a clear diagnosis, a structured rehab plan, and a realistic timeline to return to training and competition.
